What's with the name - The Soundings Group?

The definition of "soundings" includes an investigation.

"Soundings" are like sonar, listening for things, in this case thoughts, ideas and experiences.

The root "sound" can also mean "financially strong, safe and secure."

Figuratively, one definition of the word "sound" is "the effect produced on the mind by what is heard. 

A "sounding board" is a means of bringing opinions and ideas, out into the open.
